About

Gjeldsregisteret is Norway's official debt information register, owned by Tieto and operated under license from the Norwegian Ministry of Children and Families. The register collects, stores and distributes real-time information about unsecured consumer debt across the Norwegian population.

Every bank and financial institution in Norway is required by law to report unsecured debt data to the register. This includes consumer loans, credit cards, revolving credit facilities and loans secured by third parties. The data is updated daily with full transfers from all financial institutions, and changes to individual debt records are updated continuously throughout the day.

Gjeldsregisteret was established based on the Norwegian Debt Information Act (Gjeldsinformasjonsloven) and launched in 2019 to help prevent debt problems in Norwegian households. Before the register existed, banks had no way of knowing how much unsecured debt a loan applicant already carried elsewhere. Now they can check real-time figures as part of every credit assessment.

Banks, financial institutions, Husbanken, Statens pensjonskasse and municipalities use Gjeldsregisteret when processing loan applications and managing ongoing credit relationships. Credit agencies can also use the data as part of their credit scoring models. For individuals, the register offers free access through a secure login with BankID, giving full visibility into all unsecured debt registered in their name.

As part of Tietoevry, Gjeldsregisteret builds on decades of experience in secure handling of sensitive data, with strong emphasis on information security, privacy and full GDPR compliance.
